Oware remains popular in the Caribbean today, generations removed from the West African regions the game's tradition credits as its home. No single governing body owns Oware the way federations own many modern sports. It is passed on informally, at gatherings and among families, using awale, the name the game carries in French-speaking West Africa, alongside oware itself. That no national or international federation organizes the game says something about how this history has actually worked: a game preserved by the people who kept playing it, not by institutions built to formalize it after the fact.
