Which Way Does It Turn: Sungka Beside Congkak

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Sungka and Congkak, the mancala tradition of Malaysia and Indonesia, are close enough that describing them as two different games can feel like splitting hairs, and distant enough in their documented history that treating them as one game glosses over a real, unresolved question. Sungka's own rules are concrete on at least one point of mechanics: play continues clockwise, depositing one seed into every hole in turn. What the documented history does not settle is how Sungka relates to Congkak: whether Sungka descends directly from a Congkak-playing community, shares a common ancestor with it further back, or developed its own local rules that happen to resemble Congkak's closely. This atlas records that as an open question rather than resolving it in either direction, and records Congkak itself as a subject this atlas does not yet cover, flagged for a future lane to mint properly rather than folded silently into Sungka's own page.
