Paul Magriel was an American mathematician and backgammon player widely regarded as one of the greatest players and theorists in the game's history. A mathematics graduate of New York University who taught at the Newark College of Engineering, he won the World Backgammon Championship in 1978 and wrote the widely acclaimed 1976 book Backgammon, long considered the standard modern text on the game.
