World champion titles in international draughts are recognized back to 1885, when the first international tournament was played in Amiens, France, well over half a century before any federation existed to certify them. For most of that time, being recognized as world champion depended on informal consensus among serious players and clubs about who had beaten whom, a system that worked well enough to produce a continuous, generally agreed lineage of titleholders but left no single authority able to settle a genuinely disputed claim.

The Federation Mondiale du Jeu de Dames, formed in 1947 by the national federations of France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland, did not invent the championship; it took over administration of a title that already had six decades of history behind it, adding the formal qualification systems, rating structures and dispute procedures that informal consensus alone could not provide.

Draughts is not one game but a family of related games that happen to share a name in English. International draughts, played on a hundred square board, is the discipline the World Draughts Championship most often refers to, but the Federation Mondiale du Jeu de Dames also sanctions separate world championships in Russian and Brazilian draughts, both played on the smaller sixty four square board familiar to American checkers players, and in Turkish draughts, which uses different starting positions and capture rules entirely.

Running parallel championships across variants rather than declaring one true version the standard reflects how draughts actually spread historically, developing distinct regional rule sets in different countries before any international body existed to standardize them. The FMJD's choice to govern all of them rather than pick a winner keeps that regional diversity alive inside a single organizing structure instead of erasing it.
