CONMEBOL was founded 9 July 1916 in Buenos Aires by Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay and is the oldest of FIFA's six continental confederations. It has ten member associations, the only fully continental confederation with no island or extra-continental members. Its national teams have won ten FIFA World Cups between them. Longtime president Nicolas Leoz, who led the confederation from 1986 to 2013, was indicted by United States prosecutors in the 2015 FIFA corruption case on charges of taking bribes tied to broadcast and sponsorship rights, including for the Copa Libertadores, and died in 2019 while still contesting extradition.
