A History of Chess, first published in 1913 by the British scholar H.J.R. Murray, remains the foundational academic study of chess origins and its spread from India through Persia and the Islamic world into medieval Europe. Later scholarship has revised some of its specific claims, but its core account of the game lineage is still the standard reference historians of chess work from or against.
