Alpine skiing, downhill racing on prepared courses through gates, emerged as a distinct competitive discipline from the broader Nordic skiing tradition in the early twentieth century, with an early organized competition at Kitzbuhel, Austria, in 1906 and the timed slalom formalized by Arnold Lunn in 1922. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), governing both Alpine and Nordic disciplines, was founded on 2 February 1924 in Chamonix, France, during the first Olympic Winter Games, succeeding the International Skiing Commission established in Oslo in 1910.
