Badminton descends from Poona, a net-and-shuttlecock game played by British army officers in mid-nineteenth-century Pune, India, first recorded there in 1867. Officers returning home brought the game to England, where the ninth Duke of Beaufort introduced it to guests at his Gloucestershire estate, Badminton House, in 1873, giving the sport its modern name. The Badminton Association of England codified formal rules in 1893, and the International Badminton Federation, now the Badminton World Federation, was established in London on 5 July 1934 with nine founding member associations.
