Organized competitive rowing in England grew from local interest following the first Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in 1829, leading the town of Henley-on-Thames to establish an annual regatta in 1839, now Henley Royal Regatta, the oldest rowing regatta in Europe. The international governing body, FISA (now World Rowing), was created in a Turin city hall conference room on 25 June 1892 by delegates from Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland and Adriatica, making it the oldest international sports federation in the Olympic movement.
