Competitive weightlifting was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Its international governance traces to 1905, when the Amateur-Athleten-Weltunion was founded in Duisburg, Germany, jointly overseeing weightlifting and wrestling; a dedicated federation, the Federation Internationale Halterophile, was established in 1920, and the organization took its current name, International Weightlifting Federation, in 1972.
