Aleksandr Karelin is a retired Russian Greco-Roman wrestler widely considered the greatest in the discipline's history, named wrestler of the twentieth century by the sport's international federation. He won three Olympic gold medals and nine World Championships without a single career loss at that level, and went unscored upon for six straight years before a single point loss to American Rulon Gardner ended his 13 year unbeaten run at the 2000 Sydney Games. He served as flag bearer for the Russian or Soviet team at three consecutive Olympics, 1988, 1992 and 1996.
