Wrestling is among the oldest organized competitive sports, entered into the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC as the decisive, final event of the pentathlon. Combat wrestling itself is depicted far earlier still, in Egyptian tomb paintings and prehistoric European cave art. The modern international governing body traces to 1912, when delegates meeting on the eve of the Stockholm Olympics created the International Wrestlers' Union; it was renamed several times before adopting its current name, United World Wrestling, in 2014.
