FIBA was founded on 18 June 1932 in Geneva by eight national federations and now recognizes 212 national federations across five continental zones. Its most consequential reform came on 7 April 1989, when a special congress in Munich voted 56 to 13 to allow NBA players into its international events, ending decades of strict amateurism and paving the way for the 1992 United States Olympic Dream Team. In February 2022 it provisionally suspended Russia and Belarus from international competition following the invasion of Ukraine.
