Rugby league split from rugby union on 29 August 1895, when twenty-two clubs from Yorkshire and Lancashire, at a meeting at the George Hotel in Huddersfield, resigned from the Rugby Football Union to form the Northern Rugby Football Union. The dispute was over broken-time payments: compensation for working-class players' lost wages, which the RFU's own amateur administration refused to sanction. The Northern Rugby Football Union reduced teams from fifteen to thirteen players and took the name Rugby Football League in 1922.
