Table tennis grew out of an English parlour game of the 1880s and 1890s played on dining tables with improvised equipment, later marketed under names including Ping-Pong. The International Table Tennis Federation, its governing body, was founded in 1926; the first World Table Tennis Championships followed in London the same year.
